“By no other means can our favorite heroes – statesmen, soldiers, authors … be brought so close to us.  By no other means are they so clearly revealed to us in all the intimate details of their public and private lives.  Autograph letters ‘are the true living word shadows of the great … Through them we see their authors, perhaps for the first time, in a natural light, revealed by their own pen strokes.’”

An autograph (from the Greek: αὐτός, autós, "self" and γράφω, gráphō, "write") is a document transcribed entirely in the handwriting of its author, as opposed to a typeset document or one written by an amanuensis or a copyist; the meaning overlaps with that of the word holograph.

Autograph also refers to a person's artistic signature. This term is used in particular for the practice of collecting autographs of celebrities.
